An\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/22\/climate\/global-warming-temperature-range.html?searchResultPosition=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">academic paper published last month<\/a><span>\u00a0by Australian climate scientist, Steven Sherwood and a team of global colleagues, is arguably one of the most important \u2013 and one of the most terrifying \u2013 pieces of climate change research to emerge in recent years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The paper increases the estimate for the increase in world temperatures over the next century to between 2.5 and 4 degrees Celsius. This is significantly above the 2 degree threshold\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2017-08-limiting-global-degrees-celsius-important.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enshrined in the Paris agreement<\/a><span>, and is extremely bad news for the sustainability of our food production system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As such, the paper has also brought renewed focus on ways to cut carbon emissions, and some analysts believe that big data is key in this effort.
